Glide - Clarinet & Bassoon Duo
Glide for clarinet and bassoon is a playful romp in four movements of varying styles. The first movement, “Announcements,” is a series of two alternating motives: a pulsating low drone against short, active exclamations. These eventually merge and move directly into a stilted “Waltz” whose themes and accompaniments undergo inversions, reversals and ever-widening leaps. The following “Adagio” is a pensive homage to Shostakovich and accelerates into the final movement “Glide.” Here, trill-
like ostinatos serve as a cushion for gliding melodies interspersed with unison interventions in a modern jazzy style. A pointillistic treatment of the original gliding melody prepares an urgent flight to the work’s triumphant conclusion.
The piece is dedicated to the composer’s lifelong friend and colleague, clarinetist Robert DiLutis. It was premiered by the composer and Mr. DiLutis in Madrid at Clarinetfest 2015, the annual festival organized by the International Clarinet Association.Duration: 8 minutes
